Was I wrong about hopeful Filipinos?

entry info: But That's Just Me | The World Out There | 2007-11-13 | 8 Comments »

A week ago, a grade school kid, Mariannet Amper took her own life by hanging herself inside their house. Then just recently, the news said a 61-year-old farmer commits suicide by hanging himself from a tree.

This.Is.Not.Normal.
This is not us, Filipinos.
This is like making poverty as an excuse to die.

Where have all the laughters gone? What happened to the endless faith? Did you know that making these suicide news as headlines can also cause copycat suicides? Do we really need to blame Gloria Macapagal Arroyo for this? A lot of people are already living in poverty before any of those Presidents became President right?

A year ago, I wrote an entry how proud I am for Filipino people of Paradise Philippines because we are afraid of suicides.

Because I thought we have our own little way of looking at the brighter side of things; that our Catholic faith taught us that only God can take our life; that we will never get tired of waiting for that glimmer of hope.

Was I wrong?
I guess I am.

So now what’s the solution? Change the President? Again? We’ve been doing that since forever.

It’s not in the form of government. Nor the President. Nor the number of jobs, budgets, investments, infrastructure.

It’s in US. The people. We need to trash selfishness and severe abundance. Why not share that piece of bread to your neighbor? It’s a start.

This link http://www.who.int/mental_health/prevention/suicide/suicideprevent/en/ might be a great addition to add facts on the worldwide problem on suicides.

I concur to your opinion, I believe poverty is just an alibi and blaming the government on the “issue” is just being used by the “left-wing”, probably an attempt to gain publicity.

Suicidal due to suffering and poverty is just unreasonable IMO.

BTW – Nice blog! Please keep on writing ;)

Then it is simply a media hype. KMP is using it merely to advance their advocacy. They may be correct in what they say, but attributing it to poverty (again) is immoral already. And the media is goes gaga over poverty-driven suicides.

It’s not like suicide is as rampant in the Philippines as it is in China. I hope you don’t let the hype on a few poverty-related suicides affect your faith in the Filipino people. We may do a lot of foolish things as individuals but there’s a significant number who are God fearing to the point of being fatalistic (dangerous as well), and who brush off their problems with laughter. In spite of the hardships, many Filipinos wage heir daily battles with life without giving up. I used to watch Wowowee in the sembreak and I’m deeply impressed with how the contestants would share their sob stories and at the same time shout to the whole world how they’re not giving up.

    :)

Its cause of an depression and discontentment life.If we are contented of what we have then this is not the reason to end up life.Life is beautiful. There are many things to be happy. In fact there are many jobs there for their source of income. One thing that cause for their mesiry is that they dont want to work in menials job.Wake up filipinos. You have to work and you have all the hope in this country. The president is doing great .We have all the hope if we think we can be on top.just start it within yourself.Trust god above all .Only god can prosper this country and you will be
prosper if you will trust god above all.
